History

Established in 1965, Gir was set up to protect the critically endangered Asiatic Lion, whose numbers had dwindled alarmingly. Once the private hunting grounds of Nawabs, conservation efforts have transformed Gir into a sanctuary. Today, it’s one of the most successful wildlife conservation stories in India, with the lion population steadily increasing over the decades.
